これで英語で恋愛できる

これで英語で恋愛できる (小学館文庫)は、650円でアマゾンで販売されたおり、文庫本サイズで350ページの内容となっています。著者の井上一馬氏は、比較文学を専攻し、英語学習に関する書籍の執筆や海外文学の翻訳を手掛けています。

この本の特徴: 1つのテーマに対していくつかの英語例文がついているといった方式の本です。この本にはCD、インデックス(見出し)、単語集などはついてきません。

構成・内容: 人の性格、恋愛、占い、失恋、エチケット、美容院、レストラン、結婚、妊娠、喧嘩、週末の過ごし方の11つの章から構成されています。 各章は、いくつかの場面ごとに、日本語の表現に対応した英語表現がリスト化されています。

批評: この本は英語を母国語としたネイティブスピーカーによって書かれたものでないので、文法的には大丈夫でも、私たちネイティブスピーカーが普段使わない不自然(かしこまりすぎていたり昔の表現方法だったり)な表現が多々見受けられました。

不自然な表現の例:

• “I can’t stand her snobbism.”(お高い女は嫌いだ)  “snobbism”はそもそも辞書を引いても出てこない存在する単語ではありません…。まあでも言いたいことはわかるのですが、ネイティブスピーカーの私ならならこういいます　→”She’s a snobby bitch/cow.”(彼女はお高くとまったビッチだ) それか、 “She’s such a snob” (彼女は何かと色々鼻にかけて話すんだよね)　“snob”はそれ自体が既にネガティブな単語なのでそれを使うだけで聞き手は「あ～この人～のこと嫌いなんだ…」とすぐにわかるはずです。

• “He is indecent,” という単語を筆者は単に”下品な”というニュアンスで使っていますが、ネイティブスピーカーはこの“indecent”という単語を聞くと、どちらかというと性的に下品でみだらな感じを想像してしまいます。

文法的に間違っているところ

本書は、人の性格、恋愛、占い、失恋、エチケット、美容院、レストラン、結婚、妊娠、喧嘩、週末の過ごし方の11つの章から構成されています。 各章は、いくつかの場面ごとに、日本語の表現に対応した英語表現がリスト化されています。

Unfortunately I can’t find a lot to say that is good about this book, the main problem with this book is that you can tell it has not been written by a native speaker (it is possible to do this with a good editor, but Mr Inoue does not seem to have this.  Although grammatically correct, a lot of the English covered is not what we would use in spoken English.  It sounds overly formal, unnatural or old-fashioned.

A couple of examples of this are:

• He uses the phrase: “I can’t stand her snobbism.” (snobbism is not even a real word, but we would understand it) when we would be more likely to say: “She’s a snobby bitch/cow.” or even just “She’s such a snob” (snob is a negative word, so the listener already understands that you don’t like it).
• He introduces the phrase: “He is indecent,” meaning “He is coarse.” but we are much more likely to think of indecent meaning sexually indecent (like he isn’t wearing any pants!).

Then there were a number of grammatically incorrect phrases as well including:

• P142  I’ve lost my weight -> I’ve lost weight
• P169  I know very well about… -> I don’t know much about…
• P152  I haven’t noticed…-> I didn’t notice…
• P140  My boyfriend gave me.  -> My boyfriend gave me them.

So if you are thinking about buying this book, be careful about using the English.  It might be better for your study of written English  rather than spoken English.
